Composting is just nature's way of recycling plant materials like leaves, grass, twigs, brush, and fruit and vegetable wastes.
Through composting, these materials are converted into a form that can be used again to enrich the soil and nourish living plants. "Compost" is the finished soil product that is produced by proper composting.
Composting can be really simple or elaborate. I don't have the luxury of spending a lot of time like some folks can, monitoring their compost piles, turning them over and over and just sitting there watching stuff decompose nor the money to spend on elaborate composting bins. I'm not knocking that stuff. I don't want to spend the money nor the time. My motto is:
Keep it simple.
This is my simple and free compost bin. I got some wood pallets and nailed all three sides together. I added grass clipping and leaves and scraps from my kitchen and the garden. Cut the grass, put it in the bin. Rake the leaves, toss them in the bin and water.
Keep a mini pail in the kitchen and toss in your scraps (see post below on things you never compost). I get my free buckets from restaurants.

My compost bin is located under some trees (I'm indolent at times, so this makes it easy for me. I don't have to rake too many leaves in the fall. They simply "fall" right into the bin. It's also next to the chicken coop. I can toss their poop right over into the bin and when they free range, the help to keep it stirred up whenever they happen to venture upon it.
Whenever I feed water to the hens, I run the hose over the bin and water it. This system is really easy for me.
The picture above is compost after about 6 months.
I used some the other day for the pepper plants I just dug up and I'm transferring into the mini the hoop house.
Composting is really easy. I just put the right things in the compost pile and let nature do the work.
